Tuoro sul Trasimeno
Overlooking the northern shores of Lake Trasimeno on the slope of Mount Castelluccio and border between Umbria and Tuscany, Tuoro sul Trasimeno is a characteristic mediaeval village. In the historic centre one can admire the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, which houses a beautiful fresco by the futurist painter Gerardo Dottori.
Near the Lido of Tuoro, in the locality of Punta Navaccia, is Campo del Sole, an open-air museum that houses 27 large column sculptures in sandstone by famous Italian and international artists, laid-out in a spiral with a table surmounted by a solar symbol in the centre. Do not miss a visit to the Hannibal Museum, dedicated to the famous Battle of Trasimeno. In 217 B.C., the Carthaginian army led by General Hannibal Barca defeated the Roman army. Inside the multimedia museum, the visitor can relive that celebrated historical event through an immersive multimedia experience with 3D graphics and multisensory effects .
Tuoro is also the ideal starting point to discover Maggiore Island, full of historical and artistic testimonies, such as the Church of Saint Michael Archangel with its splendid frescoes, the 12th century Romanesque church of St. Saviour, the Guglielmi Castle built in 1891 on the remains of the former convent of St. Francis and the Lace Museum.
