Statue of St. Michael
Permanent Exhibition Centre of Medieval and Renaissance Culture - Santa Maria Gate Tower
Polidoro Biti de Caporali (1551-53)
The holy warrior is traditionally represented wearing a helmet, holding a sword or spear, now lost, and the dragon defeated in battle beneath his feet. It is made of gilded polychrome wood, about one meter in height, and bears the inscription SAN MICHAEL on the base and the civic emblem of the Community of Corciano. The author, sculptor from Perugia of the mid 16th century identified in the figure of Polidoro Biti de Caporali, "master of wood", received a payment for the creation of an “agniolo saint” identifiable in the statue of St. Michael Archangel.
