Sanctuary of Maria Santissima dei Miracoli
In a gorge just outside the walls of the historic castle of Castel Rigone is Santuario di Maria Santissima dei Miracoli, one of Trasimeno's most important Renaissance monuments. This imposing pietra serena building is lightened by architectural and decorative elements such as its precious rose window.
Tradition has it that this church, too, was built on the site of a historic image of the Virgin to which a number of miracles have been attributed over the years.
Its fame spread so far and wide that it even reached the ears of Pope Alexander VI who not only approved the building of the church in a papal bull of 1494 but also dedicated it to the Blessed Virgin of the Miracles. Veneration for this place was so powerful that nearby Perugia begged the Virgin for protection from a terrible plague which was taking hold of the town and contributed financially to the building of the sanctuary.
