The Tower keys
Permanent Exhibition Centre of Medieval and Renaissance Culture - Santa Maria Gate Tower
The Tower was built by Lombard workers in the 15th century and was erected in about thirty years. It has an hourglass shape, necessary to counter the attacks by the new 16th century firearms. The plan is circular, protruding above the walls. The elevation is concave, narrower in the centre and wider in the lower and upper parts, above the brick bertesche that supported the battlements, since the bastion was devoid of coverage.
