Antiquarium
The Municipal Antiquarium of Corciano is in a beautiful position on the western edge of the town, just outside the imposing 15th century walls. It was opened in 2009 and is organised in three sections.
In the paleontological section it is possible to admire the fossil remains of Mesozoic ammonites uncovered in Migiana (Lower Jurasic) and those of Quaternary mammals found in Ellera (Lower Pleistocene); an updated educational apparatus illustrates two distant and significant stages in the history of Corciano and its surroundings.
The prehistoric and protohistoric section mainly contains lithic artifacts collected from around the region. It also offers an interesting painting of Umbria in the Upper Paleolithic age to the Iron Age. Two cinerary vessels dating back to the latter phase testify the spread of the Villanovan culture in the area stretching from Perugia to Lake Trasimeno.
The section dedicated to classical archeology opens with the reconstruction of two princely chariots found in April 1812 near San Mariano dating back to the 6th century B.C. This is followed by the part dedicated to sanctuaries, simple enclosures or altars built along the main communication routes or on top of reliefs, dedicated to the gods protecting health, fertility, well-being and livestock. The Hellenistic Age is represented by material coming from the Etruscan necropolis of Strozzacapponi and Fosso Rigo, illustrated with the aid of life-size reconstructions of some burials where the grave goods were placed in their original position. The section is closed with an interesting group of objects from the Roman era, represented by material coming from the Roman villa of Palazzo Grande and grave goods of two “capuchin” tombs discovered in the area.
