Luigi Boldrini Paleontological Museo
The “Luigi Boldrini” Paleontological Museum of Pietrafitta represents a unique reality in the national panorama. The collection of fossil vertebrates, dating back to the Pleistocene, is one of the richest in Italy and Europe. Since 2011, the museum bears witness to the history of lignite mining, used to power the Enel power station. During mining activity the first fossil remains were uncovered by Luigi Boldrini, an assistant foreman of the mine who was the first to classify them recognising their significant value. The spearhead of the collection are the 8 Mammuthus Meridionalis skeletons, whose bones were left in the position as they were found.
