Crucifixion
Don Aldo Rossi Parochial Museum
Francesco da Castel della Pieve
1452, fresco
The colossal Crucifixion was painted by Francesco da Castel della Pieve, a painter from the same town as Pietro Vannucci known as Perugino. The fresco was commissioned by Prior Andrea di Giovanni, it is dated 1452 and presents a traditional mediaeval pictorial setting, which is contrasted by the style, which is already Renaissance, of the characters’ clothing in the scene, lending the work a strong blend of the two eras.
